PRESS RELEASE

29 November 2004

Visit aims to underline BSI Group’s commitment to serving businesses in the PRC and to continue the exchange of information for future standards development

Beijing, China - 29th November 2004 - BSI Group Chairman Sir David John and senior colleagues are in Beijing this week to meet with Management Systems’ clients of the BSI Group and to consolidate already established relationships with the Chinese standards community.

This trip comes in the wake of last year’s visit of the Group Chairman to Beijing and Shanghai, which paved the way for the signing of a cooperation agreement between BSI and the Standardization Administration of China (SAC) in April of 2004.  It also led to BSI hosting Mr Wang Zhongmin, Vice Administrator of SAC, on a six-month secondment in London, England.

On the current visit, Sir David and Mike Low, Director of British Standards, are meeting with Mr Li Zhonghai, Administrator of SAC to discuss a number of issues concerning standardization and developing the cooperation between SAC and BSI.

Flemming Norklit, Managing Director

Also accompanying the Chairman is Flemming Norklit, Managing Director of BSI Management Systems.  He and Sir David John are making a certificate presentation to Hua Rong Asset Management, which has achieved registration to the ISO 9001:2000 management system standard with BSI Management Systems. Sir David will also be meeting with the Certification and Accreditation Administration of China (CNCA), an important partner organization to the BSI Group going forward. Mr Norklit is also visiting Huaxia Bank.

BSI is historically predominant in the banking and financial sector in China and is currently working with seven out of the top 10 banks in China.  With branches in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Taipei and Nanjing, BSI Management Systems has over 3000 clients in the Greater China region. Major clients include China Merchants' Bank, COSCO Group, Air China, China Eastern Airline Co. Ltd., and BaoSteel Group Corp.

Sir David John says of this visit to China: “We are delighted to be here to meet with our partners and customers in both the standardization and management systems assessment arenas.  With China taking such a vital role in world trade and particularly so since joining the World Trade Organization, I regard personal contacts as vital to building relations between China and the UK.  This is especially important to the BSI Group, given the importance of trade between the two countries and the vital role that technical regulations, standardization and conformity assessment play in easing international trade.”

Sir David John also reaffirms BSI's continuing commitment to doing business in China. He says, “BSI is continuing to invest heavily in its people in China and to gain customers and partners whom we value greatly. We are indeed privileged and honoured to be working with so many of China's leading companies."
